The easiest way to plan a dinosaur birthday party

Instead of trying to decorate every inch of the room, start with a few places everyone will actually notice. For us, the biggest impact came from the party table, the cake and a few oversized dinosaur details around the room.

Think of the party in layers. Start with your main colors, add greenery, then place dinosaurs throughout the room. The dinosaurs don't all have to match. In fact, mixing different types and sizes helps the party look more playful and less like everything came straight out of one party kit.

1. Start with green leaves, dinosaurs and one bold color

You really don't need dinosaur prints on everything. Using solid colors and repeating a few jungle-inspired elements can actually make the party look more put together.

Easy decorating idea: Use dinosaur toys you already have. Put them around the cake, between serving dishes, on furniture or tucked between plants. They're basically free decorations and they make the party feel much more personal.

Party styling shortcut: Repeating the same three things throughout the room — dinosaurs, green leaves and blue — made all the separate decorations feel like one theme.

2. Let the dinosaur cake do some of the decorating

A fun cake can become part of the party decor all by itself. Our bright green dinosaur cake immediately became the center of the food table, so the rest of the food didn't need to be elaborate.

A little family detail: The dinosaur cake pan we used is actually from when my husband was little, which made using it for this birthday even more special. Ours is an older pan we've had in the family for years, but if you want to make a similar shaped dinosaur cake, I found a similar dinosaur cake pan on Amazon.

If you're keeping the cake simple, the shape can do most of the work for you. Green frosting, a few darker green details and a number candle were enough to make ours fit right into the party. You could also use small dinosaur figures, tropical leaves, chocolate rocks or a dinosaur cake topper to dress up a basic cake.

Easy food-name ideas: Herbivore Snacks for veggies, Dino Eggs for round treats, T-Rex Bites for snacks and Jurassic Juice for drinks.

3. Add a dinosaur birthday shirt

The birthday shirt was one of my favorite little details because it tied right into the theme and looked cute in party photos without needing a complicated birthday outfit.

4. Keep the dinosaur activities easy

For younger kids, activities don't need to be complicated. The best ones are things they can understand almost immediately and jump right into.

Easy dinosaur hunt: Hide little dinosaur figures around the room or yard and let each child find a few. They can take the dinosaurs home afterward, so the activity also becomes the favor.

5. Easy dinosaur party favors and treats

You don't need huge favor bags to make the kids happy. A few dinosaur-themed treats or little surprises are plenty, and they can double as part of the party table while everyone is there.

Easy favor idea: Mix one small dinosaur item with one edible treat instead of filling a giant goodie bag. A dinosaur figure or egg paired with a lollipop or cookies keeps it simple, themed and easy to hand out.

Decorate the places people will actually notice

If you're trying to keep the party affordable, put most of your decorating effort into the cake table, the main food area and one fun photo-friendly corner. Those are the places guests notice most and the areas that will show up in almost every picture.
